It is celebrated for the political and social upliftment of women with a political and human rights theme selected by the United Nations.  Some people celebrate this day by wearing purple ribbons.  

The first day was held in New York City in 1909 as a socialist political event.  In 1917, the Soviet Union declared the day a national holiday, and it spread to other surrounding countries.  It is now also celebrated in many eastern countries.
